SIR – Having had to use First Bus for a year, due to illness, I am not surprised at this story (‘Driver ‘sat and watched’ as gang of thugs beat up man on bus’, T&A, November 19).

Riding on the bus, particularly on the top deck and later in the day, is a really unpleasant experience, and something the management of First Bus should experience first-hand.

People play their music on full volume without headphones, scream/shout and display verbal/physical aggression if you ask them politely to consider other users. I eventually found the only way to escape this was to buy an MP3 player and listen to music, a solution most people seem to have found necessary.

Drivers are not interested in combating this problem, as they are isolated without any support. In my whole year I never saw an inspector.

The situation is a far cry from First Bus’s advertisement suggesting you take the bus and leave the stress of driving behind. I’m glad to be back in my car.
