SIR – The Act of Union between England and Scotland in 1707 and the treaties setting up the EU (in 1972, so far as the UK is concerned) have one thing in common, namely that neither provides for any country to leave. Therefore Scotland cannot leave the UK any more than the UK can leave the EU.

However, there may be a loophole. Perhaps the Scots could instead vote to expel England from the UK? That would leave England in the lurch but Scotland would remain in the continuing UK with its membership of the EU, its veto at the UN Security Council, its nuclear arsenal and its national debt. Not to mention Wales and Northern Ireland.

I do not for one moment think the Scots will have the heart to do that to us English. But just in case perhaps we should adopt a magnanimous posture in the hope that they will let us have Wales?
