SIR – The politicians and officers of this once-great city have done nothing whatsoever to change the timetable of Westfield. They never intended to build the complex until they were good and ready to do so.

I wrote some while ago saying that it would be after 2014 before there was any resulting building programme. The whole farrago casts a very murky pall over the city.

On top of this, the council tax payers of Bradford are expected to fork out the best part of £18 million to sweeten the deal, with road building costs and business rate holidays being arranged.

Do the people of Bradford understand what is happening before their very eyes? I complained to the Local Ombudsman, but he could find nothing wrong. He should have gone to Specsavers!

We need a public inquiry to get to the bottom of this mess.
