SIR – Many thanks to your reader for bringing back happy memories of Great Horton in the 1950s and 1960s.
The Jam Factory was indeed Jaggers Garage up to the 1970s, but G Munz butchers was on the corner of Harris Court much lower down Great Horton Road.
Mr Munz and his children John and Marie were much respected proprietors. Their sausages, pork pies and pork dripping were renowned in the village.
The only two shops still operating are the Herb Shop (sadly soon to close down) and Tom McHales barbers next door.
In the 1950s and 1960s Great Horton was a busy and pleasant village. We had four banks, six doctors, a Co-op emporium, many other butchers, greengrocers and public houses.
Interestingly, The Four Ashes public house, now an auctioneers, is exactly halfway between Hull and Liverpool on the old coach route.
I hope this information will settle the argument for your reader.
