SIR – A British computer wizard hacks into the top secret files of the US military and we refuse to send him to America to stand trial.
If a foreign national hacked into the top secret files of our military, would we not want that person brought to justice? He tells us he was looking for information on UFOs. This from one of the world’s cleverest computer hackers. By refusing extradition, have we shot ourselves in the foot?
If we prevent justice from being done in other countries, will we ignore foreigners abroad who commit crimes in this country?
Any criminal committing serious crimes or acts of terrorism in Britain now knows that if they can make a clean getaway to the US then America will now not extradite them back here. If we provide a safe haven for criminals, then others have the right to do so also.
And will all future criminals appeal to the Home Secretary on the grounds that they will commit suicide rather than face a court? And will the Home Secretary always feel sorry for them and let them off? You can’t have it both ways.
