THE newcomer of the year category celebrates the achievements of teachers who are new to the profession and have made an instant impact.

The award is open to teachers in either the primary, secondary, special school or college sectors, but who have only been teaching for less than two years.

We want to know who are the stellar new teachers setting the classroom alight with enthusiasm, ambition and new ways of working. With schools nationally struggling to attract new teachers, we want the nominees to be ones who have no doubt that teaching is for them, and show that love of the job every day.

Every school needs an infusion of new blood to keep both the classes and existing staff fresh, and this category is specifically for people who are new to the job.

As well as younger teachers, nominees could include people who have decided on a career change later into their life, and are bringing both a new perspective and life experience to schools.

Richard Morris, who works at Park Primary Pupil Referral Unit in Bowling, won the award at this year’s Schools Awards.

He was nominated by school head Kirsty Ratcliffe, who said Mr Morris helped improve pupils’ self-esteem and made them feel comfortable and safe. She said he was “highly motivated and motivational to others”.

By becoming a sponsor, you will have the chance to help present the award at the Schools Awards event in March, as well has having advertisements for your business or organisation featured in the Schools Awards supplements and coverage, and tickets to the glitzy ceremony.

In the past three years the awards have offered sponsors the opportunity to rub shoulders with the best and brightest of the district’s schools, as well as doing their part to help us celebrate their achievements.

This category has helped recognise the great work done by Bradford’s newest teachers, and proved to be the icing on the cake of their first year in the job.
