A mum is furious after her 11-year-old son was ordered off a bus more than two miles from home after mistakenly paying the incorrect fare.

Daniel Allinson caught the 576 First Calderdale bus after leaving Queensbury School to travel to his home in Tanner Hill Road, Horton Bank, Bradford.

However, his journey did not last long as he was told to get off by the driver after just two stops in nearby Hollywood Lane.

His mum Joyce Allinson said she could not understand why her son had been left to make his own way home.

She said: "I am so annoyed. Daniel asked a friend how much the fare was before getting on the bus and was mistakenly told it was 60p which was what he paid. The fare was actually 80p.

"When the bus driver realised that he had not paid the correct amount he chucked him off - even though Daniel offered to pay the remaining 20p. Daniel is only 11 and does not know the way home.

"It left him upset but fortunately he had his mobile phone with him and rang his dad who was working in London who was able to contact me and I came and picked him up.

"I contacted the driver's bosses who apologised profusely but under the circumstances why was he thrown off?

"Anything could have happened - it was fortunate that I was not too far away and was able to pick him up.

"Even if he did know his way home he would have had to cross some major roads. Daniel is a good lad who has never caused any problems on the bus."

First spokesman Duncan McGraw said bus drivers regularly faced problems over fare paying.

He said: "Our drivers often face difficult situations when young people purposefully pay a lower fare than is required to travel on a bus.

"However, in this instance we believe the boy was genuine in his efforts to rectify this mistake and we will be in contact with his family to remedy this matter."

Mr McGraw said bosses at First would talk to the driver "to get his side of the story".
