Key Yorkshire landmarks are being carried on a bus company's new double-deckers.

First's new £3 million fleet was unveiled in Centenary Square, Bradford, yesterday.

A total of 21 new vehicles have been emblazoned with pictures of landmarks, including Bradford's Alhambra Theatre and Wool Exchange.

The buses will serve routes between Bradford, Leeds and Huddersfield from this week.

Nine of the new buses, with ten foot pictures of The Alhambra, Leeds City markets and Huddersfield Library, will go into service on the X6 route between Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield. Four will operate on Service 72, Bradford to Leeds, while eight will be placed on the recently re-branded Overground Red-line route (Service 640-641).

Operations director Khadim Hussain said: "We believe the people of Bradford deserve these new buses. We are sure our proud Yorkshire customers will love to travel in buses that celebrate the county's heritage.

"The eye-catching designs are definitely a wow factor."

The vehicles include the latest in Euro IV engines - tuned and designed to reduce emissions.

The buses are more user friendly, with easier low-floor access making it easier for parents with pushchairs, wheelchair users and the elderly.

The new vehicles will be phased into service throughout 2008 and 2009.

All the buses are fitted with interior and exterior facing CCTV to offer additional security to passengers.

Mr Hussain said First would be investing a total of £6 million in new buses for the Bradford district this year, compared to £2.4 million last year and about £3 million the year before that.

The new vehicles have been delivered as part of a national £100 million investment programme by First in over 700 new buses - the company's biggest order ever and the biggest single order in bus history.
