A Bradford MP has waded into a gaming row, vowing to vote against plans to allow Manchester to host Britain's first super casino.

Bradford North MP Terry Rooney is one of more than 100 MPs to sign one of two Parliamentary petitions condemning the decision by the Casino Advisory Panel.

The MPs are demanding a committee be set up to look at the recommendations made in January.

Mr Rooney said: "It should have been Blackpool. It needs it. The idea that Manchester needs something like a casino is rubbish.

"The best thing that happened to Manchester was the IRA bomb and something of the size of the casino should be linked to tourism and Blackpool is a tourist area.

"The two casinos in Bradford may be small, and I am not sure if it has helped regeneration in the area, but it certainly has not hindered it."

The decision was a blow to Blackpool, which was hot favourite to be the venue.

MPs will be given three hours to debate the issue - double the usual time.

The decision cannot be amended, it must be approved or rejected. So if MPs reject the Manchester decision, they also reject 16 smaller casinos, including one in Leeds.
