SIR - David Cameron talks of Britain needing to go beyond humanitarian involvement to “using our military prowess to put pressure on ‘IS’ “ in the parts of Iraq and Syria where it has gained a foothold.

He justifies this on the basis that this will help to ensure the safety of this country and “keeping mayhem from our streets.”

But, isn’t there a case for saying that such activity could equally lead to precisely the very opposite effect?
