Meeting well attended, but unresolved issues remain SIR – I would like to express my sincere thanks to Reverend Beverley Mason of All Saints Church Bingley for taking the initiative in arranging a public meeting in Bingley last Thursday evening to give residents an opportunity to air their views concerning the many unresolved issues which are affecting the progress of the town.

The meeting was very well attended and the representatives of Sainsbury’s were left in no doubt at the strength of feeling of the community about the way they have misled the people of Bingley regarding the mishandling of the Bradford & Bingley site and the lack of progress in proceeding with demolition and disposal of the site.

Even after demolition, we face a period of uncertainty about the future of the site with hoardings around it for an indefinite period which could well become Bingley’s Westfield equivalent.

The second half of the meeting was dedicated to questions about other major issues affecting Bingley, including proposals to close the pool and public toilets, poor management of the Market Square and the debacle of the Sty Lane development. Many questions were asked, but very few definitive answers given.

The leader of the council seemed very lacking in detailed knowledge of the issues affecting Bingley and had obviously not been well briefed.

To his credit, he promised to go away and make inquiries and respond in due course. He said he would be back later in the year to carry out further public consultation, so I hope next time he will be better briefed and have some answers.
