SIR – If anyone had any doubts about what this country would be like if Labour won the General Election next year, after the latest strike by the public sector workforce it should be crystal clear.
At 70 I am old enough to remember vividly the 1979 ‘Winter of Discontent’ and the build-up to it with double digit percentage wage rises demanded, and in some case got, which due to associated inflation far from making those workers any better off forced Labour Chancellor Denis Healey to go cap in hand to the IMF for money to avoid, as he put it so succinctly, ‘riots in the streets’ here when financial systems might have collapsed.
Without which this country would have been in a worse state than Greece was recently.
