SIR – As, I hope, an average man in the street, I am not much exercised by Godfrey Bloom’s litany of legislation (Letters, March 28).

What does concern me, however, is the likes of Mr Bloom, Nigel Farage and other right-wing politicians banging on about the way the laws that we have are not strictly enforced. They would have us believe that judges are too soft and the roughs, rogues and drug addicts who infest our streets are, to coin a phrase, getting away with murder.

This theme is taken up by much of the media and gives a false impression that Great Britain is teetering on the edge of anarchy. Their preferred solution is an authoritarian government, but which would inevitably bring about the situation Mr Bloom fears. That is to say an administration which ignores his and my birthright of democracy under the law.
