SIR – Unbelievably, the National Farmers Union said nothing illegal had happened when an investigation into animal exports found that sheep were transported in hot, cramped conditions for 18 hours from the Sheffield area to Deux-Sevres in France, a distance of 600 miles (T&A, August 27).

We are not told how many survived that gruesome journey, but no-one seemed concerned judging by the comments made by the NFU.
