SIR – The water-turbine controversy in Saltaire proves that a lot of people care passionately about the village’s future.
That is how it should be. My worry is that the same kind of attention is not given to the little that remains of Ripleyville; Bradford’s ‘other’ industrial model village.
Recently, the T&A noted the splendid work done by schoolchildren on Heritage Trails in south Bradford, I visited the Grade II-listed Bowling Dyeworks Almshouses.
The row of almshouses on New Cross Street, near the entrance to Bowling Park, are the only buildings that survive from Victorian Ripleyville.
What I saw shocked me; some were empty, some were insecure, some were in disrepair. That the village was allowed to be demolished in 1970 is a scandal. That the almshouses are in such a condition ought to attract water-turbine, or Odeon-like attention.
