Concerns about the volume of traffic created by parents dropping their children off at school are well-documented.

However, there are other issues connected with the school run which are perhaps less well-known but no less important for that.

Put simply, too many people are putting their children and others in danger when they all set out in the car each morning.

How? The most obvious way is by not making sure their youngsters are wearing seatbelts.

It beggars belief that many parents will say they drive their children to school to make sure they get there safely.

Yet some of these self-same parents are happy enough to let their little ones travel without restraints.

If their cars were involved in an accident, or if they just had to brake suddenly, the safety, and even lives, of their children could be at risk.

And they could harm others in the car if they were thrown about by a sudden manoeuvre or impact.

Then there are some school-run parents who seem to think road markings do not apply to them and are quite happy to park illegally in places that put other road users and pedestrians, including other pupils, in danger.

So recent efforts to tackle these problems are very welcome and anyone who has had to pay a fixed penalty as part of the crackdown should have no complaints.

Indeed, if it makes them more safety-conscious, it will have been money well spent.
