A BRASS band made a loud appearance at a national event today, where Yorkshire was on show for all to appreciate.

Seven members of The City of Bradford Brass Band travelled to London to provide entertainment for visitors to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show on Monday, May 21.

Some members of the band even performed on the train down to the event - watch below.

The band was invited to the prestigious event by the Welcome to Yorkshire team, which was there to officially launch its 2018 show garden – designed by Mark Gregory.

His exhibition is inspired by the Yorkshire Dales with the focus on some of the countryside’s stand-out features such as drystone walls, picturesque villages and traditional farming landscapes.

Also representing the region in Chelsea were a Wensleydale sheep and the Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese brand.

Band members were clad in floral waistcoats designed by Wild Renata Flowers and played as part of the Welcome to Yorkshire stand for cameras from several TV outlets.

Members even had requests from celebrities at the flower show, with the likes of Alan Titchmarsh and Jeremy Paxman asking for a classic – Jerusalem – as well as On Ilkla Moor Baht ’at.

Speaking about playing at the event, trombonist, Kyle Blake, 25, of Marsh, Huddersfield, said: “It’s an honour and an opportunity. We’ve all had a fantastic day and seeing people come to us all excited and happy is something that makes us proud.”

He added: “It’s an honour to represent Yorkshire and we’re overwhelmed with the support.”

This invitation to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show follows regional success for the band last year, where they made the final three at the Yorkshire Regional Championships.

On account of that, the band then qualified to compete nationally last October at the Brass Band Finals in London.

Richard Walsaw, 48, of Shipley, who plays the tuba in the band but couldn’t make it to London this time, said: “It’s a real honour for City of Bradford Brass Band to have been asked to help represent Yorkshire at RHS Chelsea, this is another proud moment for us following our Royal Albert Hall debut last autumn.”

He added: “The guys have had a great time rubbing shoulders with all the celebs.”
