AN inquest into the death of a man who drowned two days into a family holiday was opened today.
Carl Thompson got into difficulty in the sea at Corralejo, on the island of Fuerteventura. He was plucked from the water by lifeguards but they were unable to save him, Bradford Coroners Court heard.
The hearing was told that Mr Thompson, 36, of Leeds Old Road, Heckmondwike, had arrived on the island on August 8 with his partner, their children and other family members.
On August 10, after a day out in a local town, Mr Thompson and his family returned to their beach-front hotel and decided to go for a swim.
Coroners' officer Chris Dalby said a number of family members got into trouble in strong currents. Mr Thompson's partner managed to get out of the water and raise the alarm.
Lifeguards rescued her 16-year-old brother, said Mr Dalby, but, despite getting Mr Thompson out of the sea, were unable to save him.
Bradford coroner Martin Fleming adjourned the inquest until December 15 this year.
