POLICE are appealing for witnesses following the attempted robbery of an 82-year-old woman in Mirfield.

The victim was walking in Wellhouse Lane, between 2pm and 2.10pm on Tuesday, when she was approached from behind by someone who tried to snatch her bag.

The pensioner shouted at the suspect who ran from the scene, possibly down a ginnel at the side of Mirfield Towngate Cricket Club.

The suspect, who could be male or female, was about 5ft 5ins tall and was wearing dark clothing and a top with a hood.

PC Nicole Rubio-Senior, of Kirklees Robbery Team, said: "Thankfully this individual left empty-handed but they have targeted an elderly member of our community and we are keen to identify them.

"Anyone who witnessed this incident or saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area around the time of this offence is asked to call Kirklees Robbery Team on 101."
