FIVE months ago Adam Harrison was lying in a hospital bed with multiple broken bones.

Despite his predicament, his overarching feeling was one of gratitude at still being alive following a serious mountain biking accident on Otley Chevin.

The 21 year old, from Horsforth, crashed during a descent of the hill on January 27 and suffered injuries in his back, neck, chest and shoulder.

He was saved by a 17 strong group from Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team (CVSRT) who administered first aid and then stretchered him off the hillside to an ambulance.

Convinced he owed his life to the team, Adam vowed from his hospital bed to do something to support them as a token of thanks.

Now three members of his family - Simon Manning, Richard Fenty and Debbie Forrest - have made good on that promise by carrying out a fundraising tandem skydive.

The trio completed the event at Skydive GB, near Bridlington, on June 16.

Debbie's daughter, Natalie, said: "We wanted to do something to thank the team for how they helped Adam and my mum has wanted to skydive for years, so she just sort of collared Simon and Richard into it!

"They all absolutely loved it, though the weather was a bit tricky on the day so after Richard jumped the other two had to wait for a few hours before they could go.

"We know the rescue team would like to get a dishwasher and we've raised quite a bit of money, we're hoping to have made about £500 to let them get a really good one."

The family, including a fully recovered Adam and his father, Mick, are hoping to present the team with the total sponsorship money within the next few weeks.

Natalie added: "Adam's absolutely fine apart from a small scar on one shoulder, he's fully recovered and back at work which is fantastic.

"He really wants to present it and it will be great if all the family can make the trip to do that."

CVSRT Media Secretary Tim Ingram added: "After the team hands over the casualty to the ambulance service our involvement usually ends - apart from an update from the hospital on the patient's wellbeing or a thank you letter or mention on social media.

"However, on this occasion members of Adam's family contacted the team to say they were extremely thankful for our help and mentioned they wanted to show their appreciation by doing a skydive to raise funds for us.

"We should take this opportunity to say that once we’ve rescued someone we don’t expect all our casualties or family members to throw themselves out of an aeroplane for the benefit of the team!

"That said, CVSRT are extremely grateful that folk feel compelled to go to extraordinary lengths to raise awareness and funds for us."
