Bradford City fans are among “mindless” men wanted by police for their part in large-scale disorder that delayed 61 trains and cost taxpayers thousands of pounds.

Detectives today released a number of images of the men they want to quiz about the disturbing incident that happened in Huddersfield on Saturday, May 19 – the afternoon of the Championship play-off final.

CID officers and British Transport Police are working together to investigate what happened on Westgate and Market Street. In the mayhem that ensued, terrified shopkeepers locked themselves inside their properties.

The disorder then continued into the railway station and spilled on to the tracks, causing 61 trains to be delayed and seven to be cancelled altogether.

Police have revealed that supporters of Bradford City, Leeds United and Huddersfield Town were believed to be involved. Several of the men chased each other through the platforms and eventually down the track towards Deighton, a suburb of Huddersfield.

CCTV footage, studied by police, shows several groups of fans watching the play-off final between Blackpool and West Ham in various pubs.

It is then thought that the groups arranged to meet in Huddersfield, where the worst violence erupted at around 4pm.

In all, the disruption caused 893 minutes worth of delays and cost thousands in lost earnings, a loss footed by the taxpayer, said Acting Detective Sergeant Nick Doyle, of Huddersfield CID.

He added: “These mindless individuals caused ordinary members of the public to fear for their safety. Several scared shop owners locked themselves inside and one young man had to lock himself in the car while his grandma shopped nearby.

“Behaviour of this kind will not be tolerated and we will bring those involved before the courts.

“I urge anyone who has any information to the identity of the men pictured to contact us.”

Anyone who recognises a suspect should call Acting Det Sgt Doyle on 101.
