A speeding driver who smashed into a car killing an 87-year-old grandfather and injuring four family members has been jailed for four years.

Bilal Hussain left his home minutes before losing control of the Vauxhall Vectra in Toller Lane, Bradford, and spinning and sliding into a Suzuki Alto coming the other way.

Saeed Ahmed, 30, the driver of the Alto, had no chance of avoiding the collision that killed his grandfather, front seat passenger Gulab Din, Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday.

Mr Din, of Hollins Road, Girlington, Bradford, was the much-loved and respected head of his family. He enjoyed walking and had kept fit and well, the court heard.

Mr Ahmed suffered a fractured skull, fractured ribs, a broken right leg and a fractured thigh in the crash at 2pm on November 7 last year.

He suffered memory loss that had wiped out his recollection of significant parts of his life, prosecutor Bashir Ahmed told the court.

His wife, Unsar Kauser, suffered facial fractures. The couple’s son and daughter, aged 11 and five, were also hurt.

Hussain’s brother, Abubakr Hussain, who was in the car with him, suffered a broken collar bone, pelvis and ribs.

Hussain, 23, of Bingley Road, Heaton, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.

He was doing between 50 and 61mph in a 30mph zone when he lost control of his car after overtaking a line of traffic. The vehicle narrowly missed a car driven by a woman before spinning and sliding across the road into the Suzuki and ending up on its roof.

Hussain, who suffered minor injuries, told police he could recall nothing of the crash.

In a statement to the court, Mr Din’s grandson, Majid Hussain, said his grandfather was a deeply religious man and a family role model who always had a smile on his face.

“He was loved in the community and liked by everyone he came into contact with,” he said.

In mitigation, Ian Howard, Hussain’s barrister, said his client was of previously good character and a valuable member of his community.

Of the crash, Mr Howard said: “He can only put it down to a moment of madness.”

The judge, Recorder Peter Babb, said: “Whatever sentence I impose will seem inadequate to Mr Din’s family.”

He also banned Hussain from driving for four years.
