Hundreds of drivers hit by 'lethal' speed limit prank (From Bradford Telegraph and Argus)

How long was this rogue sign in place for? Long enough for it to be reported to the T&A... and for a photographer to set up a meeting... and go and take a photo....... but obviously not long enough for a police officer to go and attend.

And exactly how many police cars would have sailed past this sign on a busy main road in the time it was up I wonder? How observant.

It used to be 40 on this road. It's only recently (last year, I think) that it was reduced to 30.

what an idiot. a jay walker and a hooligan too. those signs on the roadside are there to tell you not to go faster than 30/40 whatever the speed says. its perfectly ok to do 40 in 40 zone, or 30 in a 30 zone. we are not talking about country roads here but a **** good road, with crossings, you know what they are? they are where people with sense cross. we all slow down for bends on country roads with national speed limits, and we all slow down for roundabouts on the A1 where 70's the norm, get a grip. when you can drive then you can make comments like yours, then again if you could drive you'd see how absurd they are.

STOP walking in the road then. Observe the highway code just like the motorists were doing!

The speed camera sign that was there was changed to the 30 when the speed limit changed. We noticed the 40 a couple of days ago (but didn't report it) and wondered why it had been changed. We did however do 30mph as there were no 40mph repeater signs on the lamp posts.

If these cameras are not for making money as claimed, then all tickets over say 50mph from this camera over the last few days should automatically be cancelled, not rely on people seeing the T&A and protesting. I bet many people will pay up regardless- but it would be interesting to see how many tickets were issued.

council probably put it up to make a few quid to pay for the CITY PARK no one wanted!

Though that said did Shepard pay attention when crossing the street? Look both ways? Or did you just walk out like most people do?

No one in this country seems to know what the highway code is! Kids and most young adults alike just walk out and expect vehicles to stop for them!

Hmm, 157 'casualties' in the last 3 years. The criteria appears to be satisfied, however, on examination I wonder how many of these 'fatal and serious injury' collisions were 'speed related' as only they can be counted and how that was assessed.
In essence what this means is over the length of the A641 section from the cross roads in Wyke (Hell Fire Corner) to the Fire station at Odsal which was 40 m.p.h. and is now a 30 limit which measures about 3 KM indicates about 50 per year and therefore about 18 per Km. That seems a lot of speed related collisions to me. I would like to see the Stats.

the person who put this sign up should be ordered to pay all the fines since the sign was put up.

I have driven for many years and not picked up one driving fine or caused any accidents. I drive to the conditions.

If I happen to drive down a street in a 30mph zone where a school has just finished I shall drive slower. If it snowing or icy I shall drive slower.

If a sign says 40mph and there isn't a person in sight, then I find I have been fined because it's supposed to be a 30mph zone, I would quite rightly be peeved.

I bet you many more people drive down that same road at 30mph on their phone and get away with it, than those who speed on there.

Just yesterday I was stuck behind a car doing 20mph wondering what was going on, when I overtook I noticed that person on the phone.

Road signs are there for reference and if it was safe to drive at 40mph and I was in a 40mph zone I would drive at 40mph. If it was thick fog I would more than likely do closer to 20mph in a 40mph zone.

Clearly if your "Filthy Poor" then you won't have a car so therefore you have no right to comment on this story at all, I agree with all the above comments relating to your Quote, your talking nonsense, 30 in a 30 zone is safe and 40 in a 40 zone is safe unless the weather conditions are poor then obviously you use common sense and slow down, it's people that drive below the speed limit in perfect conditions that cause accidents, I live near this road and on a clear day there is no reason why it wouldnt be safe to do 40 on it, am not sure as to why they changed it to 30 in the first place, there are crossing in place up and down this road, it's a wide, clear road with plenty of visability so if people are willing to risk their lives by crossing where they shouldnt then that's their choice!

If someone can afford to do this as a prank maybe the councils traffic department need to look at sub-contracting their roadsigning work out to him/her.

Great comments - but as the guy who got in touch with the T&A about this story I do have a comment. The story is not about the speed limit. The problem is not to do with the speed limit. It's to do with the lack of attention to detail. And the unfair way of dealing with speeders. Camera partnership - you know when the sign was removed. So give a little. If I had increased my speed to 37 mph after this sign I would now have a real concern that I could be out of my job. A clean licence is essential to my job. Yet the sign says 40mph. What would I have done wrong? So anybody under 43mph should be sent a letter. It should say the real speed is 30mph please adhere to this in future. The camera partnership knows the date and time when the sign was removed, give 7 days leeway back from then. And don't expect the unfortunate driver who gets a ticket 28 days later to have to prove that he saw a sign! Do some work and save life's not just make money from conned drivers. Also are you sure it was a fraudulent installation and not a council **** up? It was mounted 7 feet up and bolted on. So is the sign on the other side of the road. It says 30 mph. Wouldn't a prankster change both? And who would spend 10 mins up a ladder installing this for a prank. Looks like a council **** up to me. Not intentional but a genuine mistake. To answer filthy- poor. I like your comments, they make me laugh. As a parent of kids at Appleton academy I'd be happy for a 20mph speed limit down here. Safety first and always, but do use a crossing, it's a bad example to kids if you just cross anywhere.

When cars go through red lights, which they do every single time at Queen's Road and bottom of Oak Lane, you have no chance of crossing the road. When cars ar speeding you have no chance of crossing the road. I have every right to walk in the road. Roads are NOT just made for cars, they are for people, bicycles, motorcycles, horses, cattle, geese, etc. You need to re-take your test.
