Tourism in Bradford and the rest of Yorkshire is being given a £30 million boost over the next three years.

The cash comes from regional development agency Yorkshire Forward to promote leisure, travel, sports and business tourism throughout the county before and after the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Yorkshire tourism generates £6.3 billion every year and employs more than 250,000 people.

“But we want more,” was the message to more than 1,000 invited guests at the launch of a national and international marketing campaign by Welcome to Yorkshire, which used to be the Yorkshire Tourist Board.

Along with the change of brand there are two new slogans that will be at the heart of advertising and promotional campaigns: You Can Do More in Yorkshire and A Long Weekend in Yorkshire Is Not Long Enough.

A Welcome to Yorkshire TV ad is being launched during Coronation Street tonight while a promotional DVD showing tourist attractions including Salts Mill, the National Media Museum, Cartwright Hall and the Bronte Museum at Haworth will be shown all over the world.

Newspapers, magazines and all of London’s mainline railway stations are being blitzed with the Welcome to Yorkshire message.

“Yorkshire is 1,000 different days out,” said Gary Verity, Welcome to Yorkshire’s chief executive.

Tom Riordan, chief executive of Yorkshire Forward said more needed to be done to urge agencies such as the Civil Aviation Authority, media watchdog Ofcom and the National Lottery to help.

“The CAA needs to help regional airports with more slots. Ofcom needs to recognise that the regional media is really important to Yorkshire. We were all disappointed with the National Lottery’s Park in the Heart decision in Bradford.”
