A COUPLE in their 70s were taken to hospital after a car crash in Brighouse this morning.

Emergency services were called to the incident in Huddersfield Road, Brighouse, just after 10.30am.

The husband and wife were trapped in one of the vehicles, believed to be a Peugeot, and had to be freed by fire crews.

The female driver of the other car, a Golf, was uninjured.

A spokesman for the Cleckheaton fire crew, who attended with a crew from Odsal, said the crash took place between two sets of traffic lights near the Sainsburys supermarket in the town.

He said: "The couple in the car were husband and wife, and they were taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. Their injuries didn't appear to be serious, it was more for a check-up.

"It was a low-speed collision and it looked worse than it was, but I don't think the cars will be driveable, both were badly damaged."

The road was partially blocked for around two hours as the scene was cleared.
