A VAN driver, who is thought to have nodded off to sleep while travelling at speed on a motorway near Bradford, has been fined and given nine penalty points on his licence.

A police patrol vehicle captured on video the van swerving at speed across the westbound carriageway of the M62, between junction 27 and 26 Chain Bar of the M62, and seemingly scraping the central reservation.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police's roads policing unit said the driver, 32-year-old Christopher Davies, of Holdsworth Drive, Liverpool, was believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Davies was accused of driving without due care and attention. Magistrates at Bradford found the case against him proved in his absence.

He was fined £660 and ordered to pay £85 prosecution costs and a £66 victim surcharge.

The offence took place at 4.15am on May 18 this year.
