A PENSIONER remained in a "serious" condition in hospital last night after being stabbed at his Bradford home.

The 68-year-old man suffered a chest injury during an altercation in Harrogate Street, in the Peel Park area of the city.

A 30 year-old man, who was arrested in connection with the incident, remained in police custody today.

Emergency services were called to the pensioner's home dress at about 6.45pm on Friday and he was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Late that night, a spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said the man's injuries were not fatal, but added that the severity of his condition was not known.

The following day, it was confirmed he was being treated in Leeds General Infirmary, where his injuries are described as "serious but not life-threatening".

Some witness reports initially suggested the stabbing may have taken place during an attempted burglary on the man's home, but a police spokesman said it appeared that the victim and suspect were known to each other.

One man who witnessed the aftermath of the stabbing, but did not want to be named, said there had been a significant police presence outside the property following the incident.

"It happened at a bungalow towards the bottom end of the street," he said.

"I saw a man running away, but I only got a glimpse of him.

"The old man was taken away in an ambulance, and you could see a knife left on the floor.

"People were saying that the younger man had gone into his house to try to steal bank cards and car keys."

Another resident, who said he had only moved into Harrogate Street in February, said he did not know the man who was stabbed, but had seen him arguing in the street with a man the day before the incident.

"I saw them out of my kitchen window," he said. "The younger guy looked like he was on drink or drugs, or something, and the older guy was yelling at him," he said.

"They were arguing, and the old man walked off up the street with the younger guy following him."

On the aftermath of the stabbing, he said: "There were police and ambulances all up and down the street. It's the first time I've seen police here since I moved in, it's been quiet up to now."

Councillor David Ward (Lib Dem, Bolton and Undercliffe) sounded a note of caution about speculating about the incident until the full details had emerged.

He said: "We talk about the importance of community policing, and I would urge anyone in the community who knows anything about this, however remote they think it might seem, to please come forward and offer that information to the police."

Inquiries into the incident are continuing, and anyone with information has been urged to contact West Yorkshire Police on 101.
