FIVE men appeared in court today charged with murder and attempted murder following a street disturbance in Bradford.

Mohammed Ali Nassar, 31; Amir Ali, 19; Tariq Mahmood, 26; Sajid Hussain, 32; and 38-year-old Amjid Ali, all of Cecil Avenue, Great Horton, appeared together in the secure dock at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates' court today.

They are charged with the murder of father-of-four Sarfraz Nawaz Khan and the attempted murder of Aftab Khan in Cecil Avenue last Thursday night.

Prosecutor Paul Ramsay told the court: "The Crown will say that the individual received fatal injuries in regards to a suspected stabbing."

Mr Ramsay said it was also alleged that all five defendants were involved in the attempted murder of Aftab Khan, which arose out of the same incident.

Nassar is also charged with wounding Mohammed Idris Khan with intent.

The defendants, who were all dressed in round neck grey sweaters and grey or dark jogging bottoms, were flanked in the dock by five security officers.

They spoke to confirm their names, addresses and dates of birth during the six-minute hearing.

The public gallery was packed with friends and relatives of the defendants and the dead man, as well as officers from West Yorkshire Police's Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, which is investigating the incident.

District Judge Richard Clews was told that the defendants would all be next appearing at Bradford Crown Court, via a video link, on Wednesday.

Mr Ramsay said it was not possible to say who was alleged to have struck the fatal blow, and the case was being treated as joint enterprise.

He said CCTV evidence from a neighbouring property had been served on the defence.

Bail applications in murder cases can no longer be heard at the magistrates court.

But solicitor Ansar Khan, representing Nassar and the two Alis, said bail applications in their cases would be considered at the crown court.

Khalid Hussain, for Mahmood and Hussain, said bail applications for his clients would be dealt with "in due course".

Mr Hussain said any further CCTV evidence might assist.

District Judge Clews told the defendants: "As you are well aware the charges you face are of such seriousness they must be dealt with by the crown court.

"All future hearings will take place at Bradford Crown Court, the first of those will be by video link in two days time."

The judge added: "You will all be remanded in custody. This court is not entitled to make any bail decision."

Sarfraz Khan, of Great Horton, died in hospital shortly after the disturbance.

A post-mortem examination found the father-of-four and director of ice cream van hire company Rossi's Ices died from a stab wound to the chest.
