Two police officers have been injured and two members of the public taken to hospital after a crash between a police van and a car.

The police van ended up on its side after the collision with a black Audi A3 at the A650 Shipley/Airedale Road's junction with Leeds Road, Bradford, at about 6.30am today.

A police spokesman said: "The two officers travelling in the van suffered minor injuries which did not require hospital treatment.

"A 28-year-old man who was being transported in the back of the vehicle was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary as a precaution.

"The Audi driver, a 43-year-old man, was also taken to hospital with a suspected shoulder injury."

Emergency services were at the scene and police had to shut off part of the road, diverting queuing drivers.

Traffic was backing up Wakefield Road, but the road has now reopened and traffic is was starting to ease at about 9.30am.

One man who lives nearby said: "There's a police van on its side with the windscreen totally smashed. It looks as though it has hit something. There are four or five police cars surrounding it."

A black car could also be seen facing the direction of Manchester Road on the carriageway towards Shipley, a little distance away from the van.

Surrounding roads in the city centre were very congested after the crash. One motorists said: "Wakefield Road is absolutely stuffed. I haven't turned a wheel for 15 minutes.

"People are trying to find alternative routes but it's all pretty busy."
