A BRADFORD man today appeared in a Scottish court, accused of the "religiously prejudiced" murder of a Glasgow shopkeeper.

The 32-year-old man, Tanveer Ahmed, of Toller, Bradford, made a brief, private appearance at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

He was charged with the murder of Asad Shah, 40, who ran Shah's newsagents and convenience store in Minard Road, in the Shawlands area of Glasgow.

Mr Shah was discovered with serious injuries, in Minard Road, shortly after 9pm last Thursday. He had suffered stab wounds. He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The following afternoon, police seized a grey Volkswagen Passat minicab, registered to a private hire cab driver in Bradford, from outside Mr Shah's shop. It was taken away for forensic examination.

Glasgow Police said a full investigation was underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding Mr Shah's death, which was being treated as religiously prejudiced. They had declined to comment on the seizure of the vehicle, or confirm reports that the suspect was from Bradford.

But West Yorkshire Police confirmed they were liaising with colleagues in Scotland about the community impact of the incident, which made national headlines.

The victim was a member of the Ahmadiyya sect of Islam, which preaches peace and tolerance to other religions, and was known to Dr Bary Malik, of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association in Bradford.

A spokesman for the Scottish Crown Office, which prosecutes criminal cases in Scotland, under the jurisdiction of the Procurator Fiscal, today confirmed that Tanveer Ahmed's case had been called at Glasgow Sheriff Court, in private and on petition.

The spokesman said that Ahmed, whose had his 32nd birthday earlier this month, had been charged with murder, but no plea had been taken at the hearing.

The Scottish Crown Office gave only a general address, of Toller, Bradford, for Ahmed, and said that no further detail, on address or charges, would be available at this stage in the case.

The spokesman said that Ahmed had been "committed for further examination" and remanded in custody. His next appearance at court is expected to be on Tuesday, April 5, and is also expected to be heard in private.

Ahmed's case had been under the consideration of the Procurator Fiscal at Glasgow after receiving a report "concerning a 32-year-old male in connection with an incident on March 24, 2016."

Dozens of floral tributes were laid near his shop and a fundraising page set up on the GoFundMe website in support of his family has raised more than £94,000.
