Jason Donovan has been announced as the star of hit show Priscilla Queen of the Desert, which is coming to Bradford on a UK tour.

The Australian singer will reprise the role of Tick, which he played when the musical opened in the West End.

Based on the 1994 Australian film starring Terence Stamp, Guy Pearce and Hugo Weaving, the show is described as a heart-warming adventure about love and friendship. It follows the journey of two drag queens and a transsexual across the Australian Outback from Sydney to Alice Springs in a battered old bus they call Priscilla.

The show opened in Australia in 2006 and in the West End two years later. It was a recent Broadway hit, winning several awards including Olivier and Tony Awards for Best Costume Design.

With a dazzling array of outrageous costumes and a hit parade of dance-floor favourites including It’s Raining Men, Say a Little Prayer, Go West and Hot Stuff, the production comes to Bradford with its own after-show party. On the last two nights of the Alhambra run, there will be a party in the Studio Theatre with a DJ and late bar.

Jason, 44, shot to fame in Australian soap Neighbours in the 1980s and became a chart-topping pop star, selling more than three million records. He had four Number 1 singles, including Especially for You, his 1988 duet with Kylie Minogue.

He later moved into musical theatre, starring in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Sound of Music.

He reached the finals of I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here in 2006 and Strictly Come Dancing in 2011. He can currently be seen as The Artilleryman in The War of the Worlds.

Priscilla Queen of the Desert, which runs at the Alhambra Theatre from October 7-12, also stars former Emmerdale actor Richard Grieve and West End star Graham Weaver. Tickets are available on (01274) 432000.
