Police in Bradford have vowed they will not tolerate violent robberies after a gang of muggers were locked up for a total of more than 20 years.

One victim suffered a dislocated shoulder and the other was knocked unconscious when the pair were attacked near the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford city centre in August.

The two men, aged 21 and 23, were walking in Randall Well Street, at 5am, on Sunday, August 12, when they were confronted by four men who assaulted them and removed a wallet, a gold chain and a mobile phone.

The 21-year-old was treated at Bradford Royal Infirmary for a dislocated shoulder. The older victim was knocked cold and was also taken to hospital, but did not need further treatment.

Members of the public were praised for coming to the assistance of the victims.

The four culprits have now been locked up after all pleaded guilty to robbery and causing actual bodily harm.

They are Ryan O’Hanlon, of Greenfield Avenue, Windhill, Shipley; Dean O’Toole, of Leafield Crescent, Bolton, Bradford; Dominic Lowe, of Westroyd Drive, Shipley; all aged 19, and 22-year-old Christopher Jackson, of Swan Avenue, Gilstead.

O’Hanlon was sentenced to four and a half years in a young offenders institution, O’Toole and Lowe were given four years youth custody, and Jackson was jailed for three years and three months.

They were sentenced by Judge Colin Burn at Bradford Crown Court.

After the case, Detective Constable Jane Hebdon, of Bradford South CID, said: “This group was responsible for a serious robbery and assault. One of the victims was knocked unconscious and the other was left with a serious shoulder injury.

"The suspects were promptly arrested and we are pleased to see them now behind bars. The police will not tolerate this type of crime and we hope that the sentences handed out serve as a warning to others not to get involved in these crimes.”

Det Con Hebdon said: “Members of the public came to the aid of the victims, potentially putting themselves in harm's way. These people were clearly Good Samaritans.”
