A MAN has been able to call at a village shop – just three doors away from his home – for the first time in over 35 years.

Mike Gill had been unable to access the Main Street store, now Costcutter, since being confined to a wheelchair following a road accident in 1978.

But improvements to the shop in Main Street, Sutton, near Keighley, which also now houses a post office, have included the provision of a ramp.

"It's an old building and there have always been at least a couple of steps which have prevented me getting inside," said Mr Gill, 63.

"I've had to rely on my carer to get shopping from there but now thanks to the new entrance I can shop myself.

"The place has changed a lot since I was last in!

"I'll be popping in quite frequently now, especially with the post office being there."

Jazz Singh, from the store, said he was delighted Mr Gill could now use the facilities.

"We've had a major refurbishment including the provision of disabled access," he said.

"I'm pleased Mike will now be a regular customer."
