A KEIGHLEY chippy has left others floundering in the healthy food stakes.

Old Time Fisheries, in Devonshire Street, has become the first fish and chip shop to receive a gold award from the Good Food Bradford Project.

The scheme encourages businesses to offer healthier options and provides free training and support.

Since its launch two years ago, 55 awards have been given out at bronze, silver or gold level.

Old Time Fisheries owners Mark and Jane Faichney (pictured) offer smaller-sized portions, various reduced-salt and sugar products, un-buttered and wholemeal bread options, poached fish, jacket potatoes, bottled water and fresh fruit juice.

"We are proud to be the first fish and chip shop in Bradford district to get the award at gold level," said Mrs Faichney.

"We have worked hard to provide tasty healthier menu options and our customers have welcomed it, enabling them to make informed choices."

The scheme is a partnership between West Yorkshire Trading Standards, Bradford Council and food outlets.

Trading Standards boss David Lodge said: "We know from the samples we have analysed that a regular portion of fish and chips can contain around 1,300kcals, which is more than half the recommend daily amount for a woman."
