A MEMBER of a Keighley disability support group has called for major changes to the way general elections are run.

People First member Brian Wakeling has set up an online petition at change.org after attending a politics workshop.

People First ran the workshop to encourage people with learning disabilities to vote in forthcoming elections.

Mr Wakeling believes that a democratic country should have a government representing the views of the majority of the population.

His petition states that a second election should be held if no single party received more than one third of the total electoral vote.

A similar measure should be taken if no coalition of political parties can show they together received more than 40 per cent of the votes cast.

Mr Wakeling said the second election should be run using proportional representation, rather than the current ‘first past the post’ system.

The petition can be found at change.org/p/uk-government-no-mandate-to-govern-means-another-election.
