Richard Ewen has beaten competition from nearly 7,000 hopefuls to reach the final of a national song-writing competition.

The 26-year-old business information manager, of Apperley Bridge, Bradford, has been writing songs since he was a teenager at Horsforth School, but he has never really taken it seriously.

He said he was delighted with his success in his first attempt in the competition.

He was picked to be a finalist in the adult contemporary category of the 2008 UK Songwriting Competition.

Mr Ewen said: “I was quite pleased with it being my first attempt.”

And although he sang his own song – Tell Me What’s Up – for the purposes of the competition, he is not planning to attempt singing stardom.

He said: “I love writing songs but I’m not a great singer. If I could write professionally I would love to but I would need someone to perform.”

UK Songwriting Competition overall winner Natalie Chua was selected to be one of the members of Simon Cowell’s classical band Angelis.
