Travellers evicted from a railway station car park near Keighley on Monday have now set up camp in Bradford.

Their vehicles, including caravans and vans, have parked up off Ripley Street, West Bowling.

A Bradford Council spokesman said: “We think they are the same group that was in Steeton.

“We have started proceedings to apply for a court order to get them removed.” The spokesman said it was currently the only legal action being dealt with by the Council in relation to travellers camping illegally.

About 12 vehicles left Steeton station car park at about 2pm on Monday after being served with a legal notice.

They had been on the site for about three weeks, blocking about 20 car park spaces usually used by commuters accessing services on the Airedale line.

They left in convoy and were understood then to be heading for Bradford.

They left behind a pile of rubbish, mostly plastic bags and containers, in a corner of the car park A spokesman for Northern Rail said arrangements were being made to remove the rubbish.

Reports from the station manager said there were about 100 bags of rubbish which had been stacked in a corner.

“We are working with Metro to arrange to have it removed as soon as possible,” said the Northern Rail spokesman.

Bradford Council leader Councillor Ian Greenwood, whose Little Horton ward includes Ripley Street, said the Council was aware that the travellers had camped on a parcel of land between an industrial estate and a residential area.

He said: “It’s unacceptable. I know the community will be extremely upset about any environmental degradation that might occur. I would expect that when they leave the area is left in the state they found it.”
