A nine-year-old primary school pupil is being championed as the youngest radio presenter in the UK.

Daisy Watkiss, who according to her dad, can talk the hind legs off a donkey, fronts Crazy Daisy’s Lazy Saturday slot on Drystone Radio, based in Cowling, near Skipton.

During the one-hour programme, she tells listeners what’s on TV for the weekend, reviews shows from the previous week, voices her own book reviews and plugs what’s on in the Craven area. And she chooses her own playlist.

Her programme, which starts at noon, follows her 47-year-old father Dave’s Saturday Sport Preview.

Mr Watkiss, of Cross Hills, a science teacher at Parkside School, Cullingworth, said: “I took her along with me last Easter and she can’t be quiet and chatted to the station manager.

He said she would be ideal for her own show so I reduced my sports review slot and gave her a run.

“I sat with her and helped operate the desk but now she is doing a lot herself – speaking, playing the songs and adverts and learning how to use the desk.”

Daisy, who is hoping to have a career in radio, prepares her show every night after school.

She said: “I really enjoy it. I like preparing for it by writing my own articles to get ready for the live show on Saturday.

“When I started I didn’t think I might be the youngest and now they’re researching to see if I am. It’s amazing.”

Now Daisy is waiting to have her own video diary on the BBC’s children’s programme Blue Peter.

The producers were impressed by her achievement when she wrote asking for a Blue Peter badge.

Drystone Radio station manager David Adams, said: “Daisy’s enthusiasm is an inspiration and we’re delighted that her hard work in putting together the show each week is being recognised in this way.”

Drystone Radio broadcasts to the southern Yorkshire Dales and East Lancashire on 106.9 FM.
