Calls to ban lorries from using Old Pool Bank near Otley are being stepped up on the back of a national campaign.

Pool-in-Wharfedale Parish Council said last autumn that it was looking into how HGVs could be stopped using the steep, narrow road after a lorry had hit a roadside tree there, leaving it dangling dangerously.

Now the route has been named as one of the most dangerous roads in the country being used by lorries thanks to poor advice from satellite navigation systems.

Old Pool Bank is one of 21 roads – and the only one in West Yorkshire – listed in research by the Liberal Democrats.

The party’s Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland, who has been running along Old Pool Bank as part of his training for next month’s Flora London Marathon, is supporting the campaign.

He said: “It is inappropriate for such large lorries to be using Old Pool Bank. It is far too narrow and so this not only can block the road but is unsafe for legitimate road users and pedestrians.

“It is about time legislation was introduced which forced the makers of satellite navigation systems to take into account the size of the vehicle and the appropriateness of the route.

“The Government said two years ago it would look at this but nothing has happened and meanwhile residents of Old Pool Bank and other roads with the same problem will continue to suffer HGVs wrongly using their road.”
