The speed limit on one of the main roads into Bradford will be cut by 10mph in a bid to reduce deaths and injuries, highways engineers have confirmed.

Following a public consultation process, Bradford Council has decided to push ahead with plans to reduce the speed limit along the A641, through Wyke and Low Moor, from 40mph to 30mph.

Darren Badrock, the Council’s principal engineer for the Bradford South area, said: “The public consultation has now been completed and the result was in favour of lowering the speed limit.

“Preparatory work has already started on the project which should be completed by the end of this year.”

At the beginning of this year, Bradford Coroner Roger Whittaker called on the Council to take action during an inquest into the death of former Bradford Bulls coach Eddie McGuinness.

The 43-year-old suffered “non-survivable injuries” after being thrown into the air in a collision as he tried to cross Huddersfield Road, outside the Drop Kick pub, Low Moor, in March last year.

During the inquest, Mr Whittaker said he believed the speed limit on the road should be reduced to 30mph to take account of the number of junctions and traffic lights.

Today, Councillor David Robinson (Lab, Wyke), who has campaigned for a reduction in the road’s speed limit, said it was “tremendous” that the Council had decided to go ahead with the scheme. He said it was extremely pleasing that the new road regulations would be in place in time for the opening of a £25m school when the Appleton Academy moves into new buildings in Wyke.

The new 30mph zone will run from the border with Calderdale to the south, to a point near the Odsal Top roundabout to the north.
