Plans for a new sixth form at Appleton Academy in Wyke have been approved, paving the way for the district’s first school catering for three to 19-year-olds.

The Government has agreed that the academy, which is sponsored by Bradford College, can include a sixth-form centre from September 2010.

The Minister for School and Learners’ decision means that the school, which replaced Wyke Manor and High Fernley Primary last September, can now also educate 17 to 19-year-olds.

Appleton Academy principal Dwayne Saxton said: “We are delighted that we are now able to offer our young people the opportunity to continue their education with us in the academy.”

The academy will work closely with its college sponsors to develop the curriculum, sharing staff expertise and facilities in the specialist areas of science and sport.

Kath Oldale, executive director for curriculum and quality at the college, said: “We are delighted to work in collaboration with Appleton Academy to deliver a wide range of sixth-form provision including A-level and vocational courses.”

Councillor Michael Kelly, Bradford Council’s executive member for education, added: “It was great news when approval was given for the formation of Appleton Academy in partnership with Bradford College and now this seals the deal with a sixth form there creating a through-age academy.”

Final designs for a new building on the High Fernley site are being prepared, and full plans are expected to be submitted to the Council soon. The intention would be for it to open in time for the 2011/12 academic year.
