A 22-year-old man who burgled £25,000 of gold jewellery from his sister’s home has been jailed for nine months.

A fortnight after ransacking her Bradford house, Shahzad Akhtar took his father’s powerful Audi car and drove at 100mph on the motorway, Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday.

More than two years later, he was sentenced for burglary, taking the car without consent and dangerous driving.

Prosecutor Abigail Langford said Akhtar, of Nene Street, Canterbury, Bradford, burgled his sister on July 10, 2007.

An untidy search was made of her children’s bedroom and her gold jewellery was stolen from a suitcase.

On July 25 that year, Akhtar took the keys to his father’s car and drove off in it.

Police saw him speeding along the M621 at more than 100mph, Miss Langford said.

He drove on to the M1, swerving across five carriageways and struggling to control the vehicle.

Akhtar carried on to the M62 and then back to Bradford on the A650 where he was stopped by the police.

Akhtar’s barrister, Adam Birkby, said he had been in Pakistan for up to two years after committing the offences.

He had returned to the UK, with a wife and child, a changed man.

Mr Birkby said Akhtar had gone from being an immature and selfish 19-year-old to being far more mature and responsible.

He had compensated his sister in full for her loss and recovered as much of the stolen jewellery as was possible.

“This is a very different man who presents to the court today,” Mr Birkby said.

Judge James Goss QC told Akhtar it was a high-value domestic burglary involving an untidy search of the property.

He had driven his father’s car at grossly excessive speed, with no licence or insurance, putting other road users in danger.

Akhtar was also banned from driving for 12 months.
