An iconic organ in Birkenshaw, Bradford, is being dismantled piece by piece to be sent to Cologne, Germany, following a decision to dispose of the church buildings.

The organ at Birkenshaw Methodist Church, in Bradford Road, has been bought by accomplished organist Christian Goeb, who has spent a week dismantling smaller parts and taking them by road and ferry to Cologne.

He will spend two years putting the 20,000 parts of the organ back together in his workshop and then plans to invite potential buyers to see the organ and test it out.

The impressive sound of the organ has been recorded on CD by Ernest Sherwin, who played it at the church for 59 years.

Mr Sherwin now plays a clavinova at services in the Birkenshaw Methodist Church Centre, adjacent to the church building.
