Colleagues of a Bingley man who died in a crash have paid tribute to a popular person who had a “bright future.”

Alastair Hellewell, 26, who worked at Sainsbury’s in Keighley, was killed when the vehicle in which he was a passenger hit a kerb and overturned near St Ives estate in Harden Road, Bingley.

Phil Butterfield, manager at the store in Cavendish Street, said: “We are all shocked and saddened by this tragic news and our thoughts are with Alastair’s family and friends at this difficult time. He was very popular with his colleagues and with customers and had a bright future with the company. We will all miss him.”

Mr Hellewell, of Harden Lane, Wilsden, was a team leader in training at the supermarket.

Floral tributes with messages from family and friends mark the spot where Mr Hellwell, known as “Ally”, died in the crash in a Volkswagen Polo car, being driven by his 21-year-old friend.

Mr Hellewell was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car and a 25-year-old front seat passenger, who are both from the Bingley area, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, police said.

Police were continuing their investigations into the crash, which happened at 10.45pm on Friday as the car was being driven towards Wilsden.

The driver and front seat passenger were taken to Airedale Hospital for treatment but were later released. They remained on bail yesterday.

Bradford Councillor Mike Ellis, whose Bingley Rural constituency includes Wilsden, called for a joint investigation between police and Bradford Council to find out whether anything could have been done to prevent the tragedy. He said: “Obviously, all our thoughts are with the family at this sad time and I will be asking Council officers to investigate the cause of this tragic accident.”
