Shipley residents are being urged to nominate “grot spots” as part of a new £330,000 two-year drive to tidy up the area.

Public areas can be put forward under the Shipley Smart and Clean campaign – and the focus this year will be shopping and commercial centres.

The £330,000 in grants is available for community projects until 2011 and includes a £53,000 scheme to support new voluntary activities or groups for young people.

Youth workers, residents and young people can put forward their ideas for projects for funding.

Junior sports clubs, environmental or community service activities, or arts, music and drama schemes could be considered for grants of between £1,000 and £2,000.

A buildings capital fund is also available to provide small-scale grants between £1,000 and £9,999 for public or community buildings towards improving access, efficiency or security.

It is being organised by Bradford Council’s Shipley Area Co-ordinator’s office, and nominations will be considered by the Shipley Area Committee.

Councillor David Heseltine, Shipley Area Committee chairman, said: “The community buildings grants and support for activities for young people will help address the priorities of the Shipley Action Plan.

“These three initiatives will help to improve the quality of life for people throughout the Shipley constituency.”

Wards which could benefit are Baildon, Bingley, Bingley Rural, Wharfedale, Windhill and Wrose, and Shipley.

Applications forms are available from the Shipley Area Co-ordinator’s office, Shipley Town Hall, Kirkgate, Shipley, or call (01274) 437146.

The deadline for the first round of entries is Wednesday, June 17.
