A CURRENCY exchange business will have to replace its “obtrusive and overbearing” signage after objections from a heritage officer.

Huong Chiem had submitted a retrospective planning application for new signage on 34 Market Street in Bradford city centre, occupied by First Choice Currency.

But the plans were criticised by Bradford Council’s heritage office Jon Ackroyd, who said the sign harmed the city centre conservation area.

He added: “The block is of high architectural quality although this is marred by a variety of shopfront styles, some of which are of very poor quality.

“The proposed sign is hugely out of proportion with the dimensions of the shopfront, resulting in an obtrusive and overbearing impact.”

He suggested the signs be reduced in size.

The application, which is also for a projecting sign and security cameras, has now been refused by the council.
