Plans to extend and convert a nursing home in Shipley into 24 apartments have been rejected by Bradford Council.

The derelict Fairmont Lodge Nursing Home in Otley Road would have been turned into 18 one-bedroom flats, and six two-bedroom flats.

The building has been empty since the nursing home closed ten years ago.

In refusing the application, planning officer Lucie Fillingham said the plan was an “over-development of the site”.

She said the extension to the building would be “unsympathetic and disproportionate addition to this attractive 19th Century villa.”

She added that scaling back the size of the development would help the development sit better within the immediate vicinity, and would also reduce the need for tree removal and extra parking places, improving the appearance and ecology of the development.
