A MAN rescued from the tracks at Shipley Railway Station on Sunday night is still critical and in an induced coma.

The 39-year-old self-employed joiner from Ilkley, who has not been named, underwent 15 hours of surgery at Leeds General Infirmary and will face more procedures.

A close friend, who contacted the Telegraph & Argus, said: "He will need more surgery but we're taking everything day by day. He is a tough one, a fighter. If anyone can get through this, it'll be him.

"We just want to thank his rescuer. If it hadn't been for his bravery, he wouldn't be with us. It seems others had given up on him. This man was his guardian angel."

This week we reported how Luke Brewster, 32, from Windhill, raced across train tracks to save the badly injured man, who had fallen on the tracks.

Witnesses had seen the victim lean against the train as its doors shut and it moved off, taking him underneath. The train moved about 50 yards before it stopped.

Network Rail is now working alongside the British Transport Police and the Rail Accident Investigation Branch.
