MORE than 1,700 young people in Bradford face serious challenges like abuse or neglect, a children's charity has warned.

The Children's Society has said 1,797 ten-to-18-year-olds in the district are dealing with issues like poverty, abuse, neglect, disability or chronic illness.

A supporter from Shipley is one of dozens of volunteers across the district planning to help raise funds for crucial support work by taking part in the charity’s annual Collection for Children campaign.

Jennifer Marsh is gathering a team of more than 20 of volunteers to collect in the Baildon village Co-op to support the charity’s vital work on Friday and Saturday, as well as at St John’s church in Baildon throughout this month.

Mrs Marsh has been supporting the charity for more than 20 years, and has rallied more than 150 supporters during her time as a charity volunteer.

She said: “Our church – St John’s Baildon – has always been a big supporter of The Children’s Society.

"Our chocolate-coffee morning recently raised £420, and our house-box collections gather over £1,000.

"It’s so important to help disadvantaged children and our events are always a great community effort. We all do our best and enjoy making a difference."

Rob Jackson, area director for The Children’s Society in Yorkshire, said he wanted vulnerable young people to get more help.

He said: "Many dangers including sexual exploitation and abuse go unnoticed – any of the young people in our communities could be in critical need and suffering in silence. All of us should be compelled to recognise early warning signs and point children towards vital support that is available."
