SALTAIRE has been named as one of the most affordable urban World Heritage Site in which to buy a home .

A new survey by property website Zoopla lists the Victorian model village - which was awarded UNESCO world heritage site status in 2001 - as the overall fourth cheapest UK heritage site to buy property, with an average hoses price of £155,868.

The report, published to mark the 70th anniversary of UNESCO, shows homes located near to a World Heritage Site are worth 27 per cent more than the average UK property.

Zoopla said while the average UK home was valued at £284,127, properties benefitting from the cultural status and international prestige that comes with UNESCO status can cost around £78,000 more.

Saltaire, which UNESCO listed as an "exceptionally complete and well-preserved industrial village of the second half of the 19th century", is among the more affordable heritage sites along with Liverpool’s Maritime Mercantile City.

The Orkney Islands are the UK’s most affordable World Heritage Site to buy a property with an average price of £130,169, with the most expensive area being close to the Palace of Westminster and Westminster Abbey, with an average property price of around £1.7 million.

Lawrence Hall of Zoopla said: "Bradford and Liverpool offer fantastic opportunities for potential buyers to live in cities which have shaped world culture. Britain’s World Heritage Sites have contributed massively to our history and our research shows that living near to one can add significantly to a property’s value."
